Jammu and Kashmir police arrest BJP men ahead of yatra

Jammu and Kashmir police has launched a crackdown against BJP workers and arrested six of them on Friday night in a bid to paralyse the party’s local unit, which is acting as a facilitator for the ekta yatra aimed at hoisting tricolor at the historic Lal Chowk on Republic Day.

“Six of our workers were arrested by the police at transport yard when they were returning home after meeting at our office on Friday evening. Police has seized some flags, publicity material and the car,” said Sofi Yousuf, senior vice-president of the state BJP.

Police said six persons arrested from Lal Chowk area had violated the prohibitory orders.

Several of the BJP workers and leaders have gone into hiding fearing arrest from the police. “I am not a militant. Let them (police) come and arrest me. I am in the city though I am not in present in the office”, Sofi said.

BJP vice-president alleged that he was not allowed to address the media at a local hotel in which he was supposed to highlight the alleged highhandedness of the police.

“Police foiled our plans to talk to media. But I would like to tell this government that national flag will be unfurled at clock tower in Lal Chowk on Republic Day come what may. We shall not be cowed down by such tactics,” he said.

BJYM, is leading the Ekta Yatra from Kolkata which will culminate at Lal Chowk with flag hoisting at famed clock tower in Lal Chowk on January 26.

“Youth of India under the aegis of BJYM is coming to Kashmir to spread the message of love. And being Kashmiris who are known for hospitality, it is our duty to welcome them. We are here to welcome our brethren”, said Sofi.
